Physicists at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland announced the discovery of a Higgs-like particle. Some describe the elusive Higgs boson as the "god particle." Other analogies abound. This is a big deal, but it's not as easy to understand as, say, the discovery of a nearby super nova, or a habitable planet. So what's up with the Higgs? This excellent video by Jorge Cham, of P.H.D. Comics fame, does an excellent job of laying it all out by animating an illuminating interview with a CERN physicist:
