the last few weeks included a visit from papi, quilting for an auction for owen's preschool, lots of trips to the speech therapist for marcus (who is a bit delayed in his language development) & racing around on a pedal-bike with no training wheels!

during papi's visit we made our way to manhattan beach for a foggy morning of boardwalk bike riding. we also visited the home of the french dip sandwich at phillipe's. so tasty!

Such nice photos. That quilt is a great idea. Perhaps we need to do that at next year's pancake breakfast, so I will call you for tips on doing the squares. There are mom's who can do the sewing together and quilting.
I really like the photo of papi swinging his little buddy.

went to the phillipe's link...funny about Mathieu's french dip sandwich...and the coincidence that the Pousson who came to the states in papa's geneology was a Mathieu....hadn't seen that spelling since I last looked at the blue family tree book. We should totally take a look at that thing next time you kids are in town....and make some sammiches!

The Long Con

Hiding in Plain Sight ESPN has a series of sports documentaries called 30 For 30. One of my favorites is called Broke  which is about how professional athletes often make tens of millions of dollars in their careers yet retire with nothing. One of the major "leaks" turns out to be con artists, who lure athletes into elaborate real estate schemes or business ventures. This naturally raises the question: In a tightly-knit social structure that is a sports team, how can con artists operate so effectively and extensively? The answer is quite simple: very few people taken in by con artists ever tell anyone what happened. Thus, con artists can operate out in the open with little fear of consequences because they are shielded by the collective silence of their victims. I can empathize with this. me: "owen, come here. it's time to get a new diaper" him, sprinting down the hall with no pants on: "forget about it!" he's quoting benny the rabbit, a short-lived sesame street character who happens to be in his favorite "count with me" video. i'm turning my head, trying not to let him see me laugh, because his use and tone with the phrase are so spot-on.
