The Balloon

Hey, Daddy?
Yes, Owen.
That balloon felled on the ground!
Oh no!
Yeah, it was walking and it tripped and felled on the ground.
That poor balloon! That's pretty sad.
Don't worry, Daddy, his friends are helping him.

oh poi!

he loves it! pediatricians here recommend it as a first food because it's super nutritious and easy to digest. marcus squeals with delight when he sees me take the hanalei poi (made on kauai) from the fridge.

other faves are:
rice cereal
sweet potato
peas (not really a favorite, but he tolerates it)
sweet potato puffs (quick dissolving finger food)

i forgot how much i love to introduce new foods. and i'm not ruling bananas out completely...perhaps it just needs another chance (although uncle joseph, auntie lizzie and uncle josh were all thrilled to hear marmar is not a fan).

Friday Evening Music Break

Owen loves the band El Ten Eleven. I can't tell you how happy that makes me! Our favorite song is Connie, but since there isn't a video for Connie on Youtube, here's our second-favorite El Ten Eleven song, Hot Cakes:

After Erin put Marcus to bed and Owen had put his PJs on, we had a family dance party followed by Valentine's Day Eve cupcakes.

who doesn't like bananas?

seriously. everyone likes bananas, right?

it's official. marcus HATES bananas. i have fed him bananas now on 6 different occasions, always making sure they were perfectly ripe (not bitter or overly sweet). tonight i even blended it with some rice cereal and breastmilk into a smoothie of sorts. no dice. each time i attempt it, he gags and makes a face like he's smelled something rancid.

stay tuned for a photo of his expression for utter disgust....i've just got to capture it!

Tonight we had Scarlett and her mom over for dinner. After dinner Scarlett started playing with Owen's toy plane. Owen looked distressed and started whining about not wanting her to take it home with her.

Owen: whining incomprehensibly...
Erin: "Owen, I can't understand you when you're whining. Use a big-boy voice."
Owen (calmly): "Mommy, I want not Scarlett to borrow my airplane."
Scarlett (matter-of-factly): "I'm just looking at it."
Owen: "Oh."

Then later, I was trying to fix the plane by unscrewing the battery cover.

Scarlett: "Is that a screwdriver?"
John: "Yep, it's a screwdriver."
Owen: "Yes, it asb--, um, abslit, abs-so-LUTELY is a screwdriver!"

The other day we were driving back from Costco and Owen was entertaining Marcus in the back seat. Then he stopped and said, "Mommy, Marcus is my best friend." Our hearts asb--, um, abslit, abs-so-LUTELY melted!

One of Owen's latest activities involves mixing all of his blocks, cars and playing cards together in a huge pile. He calls this "a party." Alarm bells went off the other day when he came out of quiet time and said, "Mommy, you can't wait to see the party with all my cars and the tissues." Sure enough, Owen had created a sort of confetti with the remainder of the box of tissues by his bed and had mixed it in with his pile of cars on the floor. Good times...

Erin and I had guilty moments late last week when in the morning Owen asked me, "Daddy, why are you always working?" Later that day he asked Erin, "Mommy, why are you always mad?" Great, now Owen has angry workaholics as parents!

Saturday we went to the annual Punahou School Carnival. On the way home:

Erin: "Wow, that was fun. My favorite part was riding the roller coaster with Owen!"
John: "My favorite part was riding the giant airplane! Owen, what was your favorite part?"
Owen: "My favorite part was the helicopter, and the airplane, and the roller coaster and the funnel cake and the Icee and the playground!"

And finally,

Erin: "What's your favorite food?"
Owen: "String cheese. Mommy what's your favorite food?"
Erin: "I really love ice cream."
Owen: "No, you really love to-STADAS!"

More pics from Houston

Erin's cousin Stephanie took a bunch of photos of the Pousson clan while we were in Houston for the holidays. Her excellent eye and fancy-pants digital SLR camera made for some really nice photos.

Top, from left: Erin, me, Brian and Amy. Lower, from left: Marmar, Papi, Smokey, Nonna and Owen.

Owen made the most of the one of the few days when it wasn't cold. Yes, Houston actually gets pretty cold in the winter. But don't say that to someone from Minnesota.

Erin says Marmar looks like his dad. I think he looks like Marmar.

Droolasaurus Rex

Award-winning smiles all around.

From Erin:
the other night owen and i were dining on our new favorite...bagel pizza, when he asks: "mommy, when i am going back to nonna & papi's house?" i answer that i hope it is very soon and he says "i know, maybe we can just go to the airport and ride that medium sized plane and then another one after a short wait and then ride in nonna's grey car until we get there and then smokey will lick me and i can sit in papi's chair with the arms on it. that would be REALLY great!"
